The Sassi - Superga Rack-Railway
The historical Sassi – Superga Rack-Railway is the only one of its kind in Italy. It is the present-day continuation of a centennial tradition that started back in 1884 with the Agudio cable railway. At the outset, the train was powered by an engine operating a steel cable, which ran parallel to the tracks. In 1934 the line was converted in a rack tramway with traction provided by a central rack-railway. The tram has recently been refurbished and visitors can enjoy trips reminding the olden days.
The track is 3.100m long from Sassi to Superga climbing from 225 to 650 above sea level with an average slope of 13,5%.
From Superga, visitors will enjoy a breathtaking view of Torino and the Alps. The Basilica (designed by the Italian architect Filippo Juvarra) and the tombs of the Savoy royal family are located on the top of the hill.
There are ticket office, the tramway museum and coffee bar, restaurant and a pizzeria at Sassi station at the foot of the hill, while the Superga station at the top of the hill houses the Local Hill Park Agency centre, which promotes various events of raising public environment awareness.
The rack-railway is drawn by a locomotive carriage with a maximum tow of two wagons and capacity of 210 passengers.
The service is accessible to disabled visitors upon phone reservation at GTT Tourist Offices. Each disabled visitor must be accompanied by 2 assistants.
Groups of at least 10 upon reservation.

Line 7 - Historic Tram
The historic tram “Line 7” project – under the supervision of ATTS (Association of Historical Trams in Turin) – was sponsored by the Municipality of Turin, and included as part of interventions to promote low environmetal impact public transport.
With funding from the Ministry for the Environment and in collaboration with GTT (Local Public Transport Group), the city of Turin managed to renovate a number of historic wagons in 2007. All the trams are dated between ’30s and ‘50s and have been technically, electrically and mechanically completely renovated to provide the same security and safety level of the most modern means of public transport.
An integrated, mobile museum
The historic tram “Line 7” which was projected as a “Mobile Museum” has been fitted into the urban transport network with concentric clockwise/anticlockwise routes embracing the city center. The itinerary starts from Piazza Castello, passing close to Porta Nuova Train Station and offers a new opportunity to move around the city centre both, to tourists and residents.
This initiative (first of its kind in Italy) is based on similar experiences already implemented successfully abroad, such as “Market Street Railways” in San Francisco, and the historic lines in Porto, Rotterdam, New Orleans, Santos and Lisbon.
Fares
